Freezing Rain and Icy Roadways for some on Sunday

Freezing rain will develop across portions of the DC region between 7AM and 1PM before surface temperatures warm into the 40s later during the afternoon.

This is an extremely challenging forecast because ground temperatures have remained well below freezing over the past several days and even if air temperatures rise into the middle 30s ice can form making for treacherous travel conditions.

Winter Weather Advisories were issued for portions of the northern and western suburbs and may likely need to be extended further south and eastward to account for the antecedent cold conditions of late which would increase the risk of ice formation.

If you have travel plans on Sunday morning, it would be best to cancel them altogether, as some of our interstates may become icy with numerous accidents possible.

Pay close attention to the National Weather Service this afternoon as Winter Weather Advisories may be extended southward and eastward into DC and additional counties in northern Virginia and suburban Maryland.
