Scattered Severe Thunderstorms Possible Friday Afternoon

The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed parts of the D.C. Metropolitan Area under a “Slight Risk” for Severe Thunderstorms on Friday afternoon.

The main threat from the thunderstorms will be damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and hail although the risk of an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out as wind shear in the atmosphere will be increasing during the day on Friday.

The Latest High Resolution NAM Model Guidance

The image below courtesy Tropical Tidbits shows the future-cast radar simulation for Friday afternoon between 20z (4pm EST) and  01z (9pm EST). Notice the “bowing” shape to the line of storms indicative of the potential for storms producing straight-line damaging winds.

Don’t pay too much attention to where the storms form in the image below as this model will update several times before tomorrow afternoon. The model below currently shows the threat of scattered storms- this will have to be watched in case future runs of the model indicate the threat of more numerous storms breaking out tomorrow afternoon.
