About

Thanks for visiting DCstorms.com

I have always been fascinated with severe weather and have lived in the Washington Area for over 15 years.  I’ve taken several meteorology courses at the college level and continue to learn about the weather every day.

The weather in the Mid-Atlantic is difficult to forecast.  I am disappointed with some of the local weather forecasters in the Washington Area because they wait to provide details until 24 hours before a storm hits. ‘Several inches’ of snow is forecast until the National Weather Service puts their warning products out.

I try to give as many details as possible in advance of winter weather or any significant weather event here in the Nation’s Capital.  I will issue snowfall accumulation maps as soon as possible before a storm hits the area. If you are looking for more advanced notice with more details than what you get from your local media outlet… then you have come to the right place.  If you have any suggestions, comments or questions about the weather or my website feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks for taking the time and caring about getting the forecasts right. Oh and keep the 24 inch snowfalls to a minimum this winter.

    Tim,

What’s going on? You’ve been quiet and we are missing your posts.

Hi Tim. When it comes to weather prediction, I know nothing, but have always followed the forecast for the Washington area over the last 40 years. You are correct saying that it is generally difficult to predict the major storms. I’ve found no one that seems to get it right consistently. I’ve used three sites for the last ten years, but have recently added yours because I like the very local detail. Thanks for putting out the effort.

BTW, my favorite forecast format is the “Metrogram” buried in the Unisys weather site. Here are links to the two for Dulles – one is a forecast and one is a history:

    http://weather.unisys.com/mos/meteogram/mos_met.php?inv=0&city=iad&region=ma
    http://weather.unisys.com/surface/meteogram/sfc_met.php?inv=0&city=iad&region=ma

I find the forecast to be pretty accurate in general.

    Keep up the great work.

I like your site (or rather insight)… it’s gotta be a lot to keep up, but when you do update it, it’s a good read.
