Heavy Snow Squalls & Bitter Cold

February 11, 2012

Localized snowfall amounts of 3" are possible along the Chesapeake Bay

3 to 6 PM (The High Resolution Radar Simulation Model has been hinting at a snow band developing Saturday afternoon — we will have to wait and see if this develops):

  • Arctic Front will push through the National Capital Region ushering in the coldest air of the season.
  • Temperatures will plummet into the upper 20s late this afternoon with a possible burst of snow  (snow burst may only last 30 minutes).
  • 1 inch may accumulate on untreated surfaces in this snow band and visibility will drop to under a half mile.

9 PM through 3AM:

  • A strong disturbance will slide south-south-east out of central Pennsylvania crossing the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Scattered snow showers/Bay squalls are likely, especially from the big cities eastward toward the Bay and Beaches.
  • Eastern Shore of Maryland may pick up an additional inch to two inches of snow (very hard to pin down right now) with this activity.
  • Temperatures will fall well below freezing so roads will become extremely slick.
  • Winds will increase 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 40 mph producing wind chills near zero.

HYPOTHERMIA RISKS & DRIVING CONDITIONS THIS EVENING:

  • Be very careful driving this afternoon and evening. Even with marginal temperatures this afternoon, visibility will drop to under a half mile in the heavier snow squalls (with the arctic front)… later tonight any untreated roadways will become snow-covered (with the snow showers/squall activity surrounding the Chesapeake Bay).
  • Hypothermia will be an issue late this evening with wind chills 10 below zero in the mountains and the lower single digits to near zero in the big cities! Bundle Up… here is the pattern change that I advertised a week ago… the NAO may go negative towards the end of this upcoming week… now we just have to hope for a classic “Northeast President’s Day Blizzard” … I remain cautiously optimistic… this has been one of the most boring winters I have seen in the 16 years I have lived in the Washington Area.

While you might be looking forward to a President’s Day Blizzard – there are some of us who have to go places and don’t relish the idea of being stranded. Sorry you’re bored. Read a book.

LOL – I am not bored, I just find the the lack of any appreciable snowfall to be boring. It has been a very uneventful winter for weather enthusiasts. I’m sure that if a storm does form around President’s Day, with the way this winter has gone, it will probably go out to sea. The ugly, barren trees and barren ground of the dead of winter get old after a while. A nice 6″ storm would be fine by me – nobody gets stranded and those of us that like the beautiful, white snow can enjoy it in the great outdoors. I’m working on three books now — still want a nice snow.
